Jeffrey Howard Archer, Baron Archer of Weston-super-Mare was born in London on 15th April 1940 and was brought up in Somerset. The son of a printer, he received his education at Wellington School, and Brasenose College, Oxford, where he gained an athletics blue. He was also President of the University Athletics Club, and went on to run the 100 yards in 9.6 seconds for Great Britain in 1966. Jeffrey Archer is a former Member of Parliament and deputy chairman of the Conservative Party, and became a life peer in 1992. His political career, having suffered several controversies, ended after a conviction for perverting the course of justice and his subsequent imprisonment. He is married to Mary Archer, a scientist specialising in solar power. Outside politics, he is a prolific novelist, playwright and short story writer.
