In 1860, Japan is being forced out of its age old isolation by a new Emperor who challenges the power of the Shogun. Captain Ralph Freeman, a US officer on the run who has found no other refuge other than in this feudal & often barbaric land, meets Alison Gray, a victim of a shipwreck. They both have to face a fearful and fateful struggle to survive as the ancient culture is torn apart by a very bloody civil war.
