This is the 1974 play by Peter Nichols 'Chez Nous: A Domestic Comedy' published by Samuel French, 63pp, ISBN 0573013195. It was written to be played by four men and three women and is set in a barn in South West France (the Dordogne). Dick and Liz are residing in a French Farmhouse after the unexpected success of his book, a serious study on teenage lib (title 'The Nubile Baby' by his enterprising publisher), which made living in England difficult. Their friends Phil and Diana are visiting them, and this is responsible for a series of startling revelations. First it transpires that Dick's supposed baby son is in fact the child of his own teenage daughter Jane, and that Liz has declared the child to be her own to cover up for Jane: and later the real father is revealed as none other than 'Uncle' Phil himself. The ensuing events are further complicated by the arrival of two Americans to interview Dick on his book - but underneath the 'domestic comedy' surface of this plot is a large helping of food for thought... Chez Nous was first presented by Memorial Enterprises at the Globe Theatre, London on 6th February, 1974, with the following cast of characters: Dick (Denholm Elliott), Phil (Albert Finney), Diana (Geraldine McEwan), Liz (Pat Heywood), Gunga Din (Denis Carey), Zoe (Beth Porter) and Burt (Glenn Beck). The play was directed by Robert Chetwyn with the setting by Michael Annals. TWO ACTS: Act I: Scene 1: Late Morning, Scene 2: That Afternoon, Scene 3: Later that evening, Scene 4: The next morning; Act II: Scene 1: That afternoon, Scene 2: Early evening the same day, Scene 3: Noon the following day.
