Claire Etcherelli was born in 1934 in Bordeaux. Her father died in the war, she was raised by her mother and paternal grandfather . She mostly lived in Bordeaux, in the Basque country and Paris. Following a very modest background, she received a scholarship to continue her studies. When she moved to Paris , the lack of money forced her into factory to work for two years. From this experience Claire Etcherelli retains the image of a challenging, haunting environment.
She is a French novelist who won the Prix Femina prize for her novel - Elise, or The Real Life (1967).
